The Modern Digital Marketing Funnel (and Where Most Brands Leak)
Feb 20, 2026 · 7 min read
The funnel, simplified
Marketing has more frameworks than it needs. Strip them all back and you get four stages every brand has to win:
- Awareness — short-form video, SEO, paid social, PR.
- Engagement — email, community, retargeting, content.
- Conversion — landing pages, offers, social proof, checkout.
- Retention — onboarding, lifecycle emails, support, loyalty.
- Plenty of reach, no email capture. Reels go viral, traffic spikes, nothing is saved. The next launch starts from zero again.
- Plenty of clicks, no clear offer. The landing page lists features instead of one outcome with one CTA.
- Plenty of buyers, no second purchase. No onboarding email, no review request, no reason to come back.
- Awareness: Are at least 100 new strangers seeing the brand every week?
- Engagement: Do you have a way to talk to those strangers again for free?
- Conversion: Does your best landing page convert at 2%+?
- Retention: Do 20%+ of buyers come back within 90 days?
- Awareness leak: pick one platform, post daily for 90 days, repurpose into 2 others.
- Engagement leak: add a single email opt-in with a real reason to subscribe — a checklist, a discount, a weekly tip.
- Conversion leak: rewrite the headline to name the audience and the outcome. Move social proof next to the CTA.
- Retention leak: ship a 5-email onboarding sequence and a 30-day re-engagement email.
Most small brands obsess over stage 1 and ignore the rest. That's why they feel busy and broke at the same time.
Where small brands leak
Most brands aren't bad at marketing — they're bad at one stage of marketing, and it bleeds the rest dry.
The three most common leaks I see:
A simple diagnostic
For each stage, score yourself 1–5:
Whichever stage scored lowest is the only thing you should work on this quarter.
Fixes that compound
The rule
Don't redesign the funnel. Find the leakiest step, fix it, and watch the rest compound.
You don't need more channels. You need fewer leaks.
